‘Blue Bloods’: Why Fans Are Still Hung Up on Donnie Wahlberg’s Karaoke Scene

While Donnie Wahlberg has been portraying Danny Reagan on the hit CBS series Blue Bloods since it premiered in 2009, fans also know him well as a part of the iconic boy band New Kids On The Block (NKOTB).

This is why fans were excited during the Blue Bloods season-twelve premiere episode earlier this month, as they saw Danny Reagan prepare to sing a little karaoke.

The fans, of course, hoped that their favorite Blue Bloods detective would be treating them to a familiar song – straight from the New Kids playlist.

However, this was not to be as the longtime Blue Bloods detective instead picked a popular Rolling Stones number to sing that night.

While few disagree that it was an awesome moment, some fans couldn’t help but share their disappointment in Danny Reagan’s Karaoke selection.

‘Blue Bloods’ Fans Hoped For NKOTB Cross-Over

“I was hoping he would sing a New Kids song,” responded one fan on a Twitter post that features a smiling Wahlberg in the middle of the season twelve scene.

“When Danny went up to the mic, we were screaming… Please sing NKOTB!!!! That would have been awesome,” says another fan.

Donnie Wahlberg says he knew that his longtime fans were waiting for a big moment where he would merge his life as a performer with Danny Reagan’s world on Blue Bloods. This, he says, is why he didn’t try to stop the scene in the first place.

“I probably would have talked my way out of shooting this scene but I knew you guys would love it,” Wahlberg wrote on his Twitter page about the scene. “Anything for my Blockheads!”

Sure fans are still bummed that they missed a perfect opportunity to see Wahlberg sing a little New Kids On The Block during the Blue Bloods scene. However, they did get to see some of his slick dance moves. Which is all we really need, right?

Donnie Wahlberg Adds Some NKOTB Flare

Also, while his character may not be on stage performing the songs on Blue Bloods, Donnie Wahlberg says there have been quite a few moments when he has added a few New Kids On The Block “easter eggs” into Blue Bloods episodes.

“The first season I snuck a New Kids On The Block [song] title in every episode,” Wahlberg has said.

“So I would tell, like Bridget’s character ‘Hey, hang tough’ and ‘Call It What You Want,’ ‘Step by Step,’” the actor and performer explains. “I was speaking in song titles pretty much every episode and nobody was really catching it because of the way I did it.”

While some people didn’t catch on to what he was doing, Wahlberg knew his New Kids On The Block fans were picking up on the little moments.

“But my music fans and the [NKOTB] fans definitely were catching it,” Wahlberg says.

“And every week they would hashtag whatever the song title was,” the longtime performer adds. “It would usually end up trending on Twitter. I love it.”
