‘Blue Bloods’: Will Estes was ‘Blown Away’ When ‘Happy Days’ Star Ron Howard Said He Was a Fan

“Blue Bloods” star Will Estes knew his show had hit it big when people started coming up to him in public and telling him they were fans. But not just any people. TV stars Estes himself admired.

In fact, Estes will never forget the time when “Happy Days” star Ron Howard walked up to him in a restaurant. In a 2019 interview with CBS’s Watch Magazine, Estes recalled how he was starstruck at the recognition from such a Hollywood heavyweight as Howard.

“The other day I was in a restaurant and this guy comes up to me and says, ‘I love that show you’re on. I’m Ron,’” Estes recounted. “I’m like, ‘I know who you are. You’re Ron Howard.’ I’m a huge fan of his work and of him as a person, and I got to meet him! It doesn’t stop blowing me away that someone like that has even seen the show. He was like, ‘Say hi to Donnie. We did ‘Ransom’ together.’”

But Howard isn’t the only one who’s rooting for the Reagan family. By the Season 11 finale, millions of fans were tuning in to see how the Reagans would fare. And over time, Estes’s character has become a fan favorite.

‘Blue Bloods’ Stars Think Their Chemistry Led to Jamko

On the show, Estes plays Jamie Reagan. Vanessa Ray plays his partner-turned-wife, Eddie Janko. Fans have taken to calling the duo ‘Jamko.’ And many fans have really latched onto the “Blue Bloods” couple.

Estes admits he was opposed to the coupling of their characters at first. He compared it to “The X-Files” in one interview. In short, once a series resolves the will-they-won’t-they question once and for all, it kills off all the dramatic tension.

“It was the ‘Moonlighting’ thing,” Estes told Watch. “Once they got together, the story was over. The anticipation is so much better than the monster—that’s what Hitchcock taught us. So we were nervous about what it was going to mean once we were together.”

Still, Estes admits that his chemistry with Ray – the two are close platonic friends offscreen – helped seal the deal for Jamko. He wasn’t necessarily told where the storyline was going to go when Ray signed on to “Blue Bloods.” Their characters’ relationship just developed organically out of the performances.

“One of the oddities of television is that sometimes performances dictate the story,” Estes said. “It’s a create-as-you-go format. So certainly the writers wrote it, but if we were horrible together they wouldn’t have written it. Us having a great time together helped.”

Ray and Estes haven’t stopped having a great time together since their characters got married. And fortunately for “Blue Bloods” fans, CBS recently renewed the show for Season 12, so there’s more Jamko drama on the way later this year.
