‘Blue Bloods’: Will Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan Find Love Next Season?

by John Jamison

Granted, it’s been a few decades since Tom Selleck played the studly private detective on “Magnum, P.I.” But that doesn’t mean the 76-year old actor has lost any of his charms. His character on “Blue Bloods” still rocks a mustache to perfection, is in good shape, and is the NYPD commissioner. What a catch. If that guy can’t find love, what hope do the rest of us have?

Yet that’s the question we found ourselves asking. When, if ever, will Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan settle down again? Fans of “Blue Bloods” will know that there hasn’t been a serious lady in the picture for Frank in quite a while. His wife, and the mother of the Reagan children, passed away before the show picks up in Season 1.

And Frank has dabbled in a few flings here and there throughout the course of the show. But the lack of a love interest is more intentional than one might initially think. One of the fan-favorite potential matches has been corporate counsel Kelly Peterson, played by Bebe Neuwirth.

In a 2019 interview with TV Insider, Tom Selleck talked briefly about the subject of Frank’s love life on “Blue Bloods.”

“I love working with Bebe, but I don’t see their characters getting married. People are always saying Frank must be lonely, so when are we going to do a romantic story?” Selleck said. “It’s important he remains a man alone in overall concept because that’s part of the sacrifice he’s made. And how do you meet, fall in love and then have the relationship end in one episode?”

The ‘Blue Bloods’ Character’s Loneliness is an Intentional Choice

Here we were thinking that being the police commissioner of the NYPD made Frank Reagan a catch. On the contrary, his position, apparently, means that he has very little extra time or energy available for pursuing a serious relationship.

As cool as it would be for fans to see this other side of Frank Reagan, “Blue Bloods” network CBS doesn’t think that a serious love interest fits his character at present. Of course, that doesn’t say anything about what might happen if Frank resigns from his position.

And that’s becoming more and more likely with each passing season. Back in December, Tom Selleck talked to TV Insider about just how close Frank Reagan was to retiring in Season 11.

“Frank is seriously considering resignation. The job is so wearing on him. He’s looked for ways out before, but this time it’s serious,” he said.

So who knows? There’s a world in which Frank Reagan retires on the show, and Tom Selleck continues playing the role. Fans would have the chance to see what a fully relaxed Frank does with his time. He’d have more than a decent chance at love then.
