Longtime actor Peter Scolari passed away this morning, Friday, October 22. The sixty-six-year-old actor had been battling cancer over the last two years.
During his successful career, Peter Scolari found fame over the last few decades in a variety of roles. And, one of his most remembered roles was also the source of multiple Emmy nominations as well a longtime friendship.
From 1987 until 1990, Peter Scolari portrayed Michael Harris on the popular Bob Newhart-led series, Newhart.
Recently, Newhart opened up about the loss of the actor and his longtime friend.
“I knew that Peter was sick, but his death still comes as a great shock,” Bob Newhart told Variety in reaction to the tragic news.
“We were friends and colleagues for over 40 years,” Bob Newhart continues in the Friday statement. “Julia [Duffy] and Peter, as a vacuous couple (Michael and Stephanie), were an essential part of the success of ‘Newhart.’”
A Grieving Bob Newhart Says Scolari Will Be Sorely Missed
Bob Newhart adds that this loss is a devastating one.
“In life, he was a fantastic person,” Bob Newhart says of Peter Scolari.
“And it was a joy to work together,” the actor continues. “He will be sorely missed and his passing at 66 is much too early.”
Peter Solari rose to stardom in the 1980s first starring alongside famed movie star Tom Hanks in the hilarious sitcom Bosom Buddies.
In the short-lived series, Peter Scolari and Tom Hanks portray two professionals who opt to disguise themselves as women. The men do this in order to obtain a low-cost apartment within a women’s-only apartment building.
Then, in 1984, Peter Scolari joined the Newhart cast as Michael Harris. This was a role for which the actor was nominated for three Emmy Awards.
The hit series starred Bob Newhart as Dick Loudon an author who has left New York City with his wife in order to operate a historic Vermont Inn.
In the series, Peter Scolari portrays Michael Harris, a local sort of “yuppie” type television producer who falls madly in love with the self-absorbed Stephanie (Julia Duffy).
Stephanie works as a maid at the Newhart Hotel. Scolari remained a regular Newhart cast member until the series ended in 1990.

Most recently, Peter Scolari could be seen in his award-winning role as Tad Horvath in the popular series Girls. Scolari’s Ted Horvath was the on-screen father to Lena Dunham’s character Hannah.
During his long and successful acting career, Peter Scolari also made a variety of appearances in a variety of television shows.
Some of Scolari’s most memorable guest-starring roles included runs on Murphy Brown, The West Wing, ER, Ally McBeal, Law & Order: SVU, Gotham, and Evil.
