It was announced late Monday night that Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin have formed a new NASCAR team featuring Bubba Wallace behind the wheel. Jordan’s spokeswoman, Estee Portnoy, released a statement from the star athlete and billionaire.

Growing up in North Carolina, my parents would take my brothers, sisters, and me to races, and I’ve been a NASCAR fan my whole life. The opportunity to own my own racing team in partnership with my friend, Denny Hamlin, and to have Bubba Wallace driving for us, is very exciting for me. Historically, NASCAR has struggled with diversity and there have been few Black owners. The timing seemed perfect as NASCAR is evolving and embracing social change more and more. In addition to the recent commitment and donation I have made to combat systemic racism, I see this as a chance to educate a new audience and open more opportunities for Black people in racing.

Many others also posted Michael Jordan’s statement. The Charlotte Hornets posted of the quote from their chairman and NASCAR replied a mind-blowing Bubba Wallace GIF.

Bleacher Report posted a graphic of the last sentence in Jordan’s statement, which highlights education and building opportunities.

Twitter users were quick to comment on the situation in the tweet’s comments. These two users tweet back-and-forth about Jordan’s success, while alluding to two other basketball stars, Scottie Pippen and LeBron James.

Meanwhile two others disagree about the entire sport of NASCAR in the comments, racking in many likes each.

The team name, car manufacturer, and number have all yet to be named, but many NASCAR fans are making guesses. Because of Michael Jordan’s incredible basketball career, many wonder if Bubba Wallace will drive #23, the number of Michael Jordan’s retired jersey.
