‘Cheers’ Star Ted Danson Reveals the Hilarious Thing He Hears Most from Fans on the Street

Is there such a thing as an insulting compliment? Insultement? If so, former Cheers star Ted Danson says he gets them all the time.

Danson took part in a round table discussion recently with several other comedians, including Pete Davidson, Ed Helms, and others. At one point, the topic of fan encounters came up. Each comic had their own weird encounters, but Danson’s was hilarious.

Ted Danson, who has been a sitcom star for decades, is still best known for Cheers. So, most of his fan interactions are about the famed Boston bar. Well, sort of.

“I get a lot of people coming up and saying, ‘My grandmother loved watching you on Cheers,’” he said. “And I’ll say, ‘Hold on, let me turn on my hearing aids. OK, say again?’”

Ed Helms also says he has a lot of embarrassing on-the-street encounters.

“People just scream ‘Nard Dog’ [the nickname of his character Andy Bernard from The Office] at me from very far away. Like, all the way across airport terminals …,” he said. “Oftentimes I’ll just do that awkward thing where I pretend like I didn’t hear it, but then, like, 30 people suddenly look at you, and then they start shouting “Nard Dog” and … yeah, it’s just awkward.”

Davidson joked he just runs away as fast as possible to avoid contact with fans because he’s scared of “life and people.”

Ted Danson Doesn’t Want a ‘Cheers’ Reboot

Those grandmas will have to make do with re-runs of Cheers if Ted Danson has anything to say about it. He said in a 2018 interview on NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” that he doesn’t want to reprise his role as Sam Malone for a modern-day version of the popular 1980s sitcom.

The reason? Well, the cast has aged just as much as its fan base.

“It’d be a bunch of people in their 70s in a bar going, ‘What? What? A horse walked into a what?’” Danson said to Meyers. “Maybe Cheers, The Old Age Home.”

Plus, reassembling that cast would be a logistical nightmare and cost a fortune. Most of them have gone on to become major stars or at least popular pop-culture figures. They include Woody Harrelson, who is an A-list movie star, Kirstie Alley, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger, who is a go-to voice actor for Pixar films.

Plus, Ted Danson already stars on Mr. Mayor, an NBC comedy from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, who wrote and produced 30 Rock.

So, it seems Cheers fans will have to settle for watching re-runs of the show.
