On Saturday, the world lost a timeless character actor in Olympia Dukakis. Much of Hollywood and the world is remembering the star, including Cher.
The brother of the acclaimed actress announced the news Saturday morning, saying she had passed after a period of failing health.
Cher and Olympia Dukakis starred in the 1987 classic, Moonstruck. While Cher portrayed the main character Loretta Castorini, a late-30s woman struggling to find love. Dukakis portrayed Loretta’s mother, Rose, a legendarily snarky and suspecting mother.
Dukakis absolutely nailed the role, making her biggest impact in the world of cinema to that point. She went on to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
After the news broke of her unfortunate death, Cher took to social media to express her love and sorrow. Further, she included lovely photos of Dukakis.

In addition to her first tweet, Cher followed up with another bit of detail from their final phone call together.

Olympia Dukakis’ Brother Announces Death
The announcement of the legendary actor’s death came 10:39 a.m. CT on Saturday, May 1. Dukakis’ brother, Apollo, took to Facebook to update friends, families and fans about her passing.

“My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City,” Apollo Dukakis wrote. “After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her Louis.”
Apollo Dukakis is referring to Louis Zorich, her husband who passed away in 2018.
