You knew it was coming, Chicago Fire fans. When Matt Casey left the team in Episode 200, there always had to be a new face on the horizon.

Truck 81 needs a leader, and they seem to have found one in Brett Dalton. TVLine confirms that Chicago Fire will introduce the actor as interim Lieutenant Jason Pelham in this week’s episode. You heard that right, Pelham is arriving swiftly this Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.

With Jesse Spencer leaving the show and his character Matt Casey heading to Oregon to take care of his late friend’s son, the show had to find an immediate replacement.

And showrunner Derek Haas makes it clear right away this isn’t a one-in one-out scenario, at least for the job of lieutenant. That would be doing a massive disservice to Stella.

The Chicago Fire. fan-favorite character has recently completed training for the position. But does that mean the job is her’s?

[Stella becoming lieutenant] is going to be a hot topic of conversation through this next batch of episodes,” Haas said. “Whether they’re going to hold a spot for her while she’s off doing her good work for Girls on Fire.”

But as the TVLine report confirms, Pelham is at least the interim leader when he shows up on Chicago Fire. If he makes that permanent remains to be seen.

‘Chicago Fire’: Could Matt Casey Return?

What’s nuts about all this is that we may have not seen the last of Matt Casey. Of course, he’s going to be gone for quite a while and the show will look forward. But Haas didn’t rule out a reality where Casey returns to Chicago.

For one, his relationship with Sylvie Brett is expected to continue per the Chicago Fire boss. Plus, he even teased that we could see Casey return before his “commitment” is finished.

“This is a three-year commitment that Casey is making, but hopefully, we’ll see him before those three years are done.”

On top of that, Jesse Spencer didn’t rule out a return to Chicago Fire either.

“There is the potential for me to come back. I still am in Chicago right now. I’m not running off to Los Angeles or anything, although I might escape for a little bit of the winter,” Spencer said while laughing. “My home here with my wife is in Chicago, and so I’m still going to be here, but I’m just stepping back for right now.”

Essentially, there is fertile ground for a Matt Casey surprise appearance at some point. Will that be soon? Who’s to say, but fans can at least hold tight knowing what’s on the horizon.
