Just a few months after Annie Ilonzeh’s departure from Chicago Fire, Kara Killmer shared her thoughts about her former co-star’s exit from the hit series.

During a November 2020 interview with TellTaleTV, the Chicago Fire star stated she loved working alongside Ilonzeh on the series. “We’re still close. And I loved their relationship.”

Killmer also stated she thinks what will be different about Chicago Fire character Gianna Mackey (portrayed by Adriyan Rae) is that the audience has seen Sylvie Brett be best friends with her partner twice now. She believes that the relationship between Mackey and Brett will be a little bit different. “Gianna is very green, and so I think it’s going to be a little bit more like a mentor-mentee kind of dynamic.”

“There was a scene that they cut where she’s talking to Stella about, ‘I don’t want to get attached because it just makes it harder when they leave,’” the Chicago Fire castmate then explained. In regards to working with Rae, Killmer stated, “She is incredible. She’s got a great sense of humor. It feels like she’s been here forever. She has integrated herself into the cast pretty flawlessly for only having shot two episodes.”

Annie Ilonzeh exited Chicago Fire after her character, Emily Foster, announced she had re-applied for medical school and even landed an interview with admissions. Killmer’s character previously lost her first partner and former friend, Gabby Dawson (played by Monica Raymond) in 2018. Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas spoke about Ilonzeh’s departure by adding, “I think she’s terrific and plays the character with just the right amount of fun and swagger.”

Kara Killmer Opens Up About Working Alongside Jesse Spencer on ‘Chicago Fire’

While also chatting with TellTaleTV, Kara Killmer discussed working alongside her now former Chicago Fire co-star Jesse Spencer. “Thank God, it’s Jesse! I really enjoy working with him. He is such a delight. He’s a total dork in real life.”

Killmer stated that she and Spencer sit around and make puns and play tiny instruments while on the Chicago Fire set. “That’s kind of what the behind-the-scenes looks like for he and I. But I mean.”

Killmer also discussed how the two Chicago Fire characters interact with Gabby making guest appearances here and there.

“I think in the back of Sylvie’s mind, she’s been overwhelmingly aware of the girl code aspect of everything. And also just, I think that she does deep down just believe, ‘There’s no way that I can compete with Dawson. There’s no way I can. I’ll never measure up to that.’”

Last month, Jesse Spencer and Derek Haas announced his departure from Chicago Fire.
