As the end of Season 8 approaches on “Chicago P.D.,” the stakes get higher and more dangerous. Airing Wednesday on NBC, the penultimate episode will see the team tested in a major way. Will they be able to work through their differences? Or will the case cost them their unity?
According to LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Kevin Atwater on the long-running “Chicago” show, the unit may very well find itself divided as the season comes to a close. He talked to TVLine about how the upcoming episode could complicate matters.
“I think this episode is a pretty interesting example of the way reform challenges all of our integrities. It challenges everybody’s character a little bit. The team that we love may find themselves divided — some people on one side of progress, and other people on the other,” Hawkins said.
While Hawkins hints at division among the unit, we can’t be sure exactly how that will play out. With loyalties between his character Atwater and Marina Squerciati’s Burgess, and a different kind of bond between him and Patrick John Flueger’s Adam Ruzek, there’s really no telling exactly what kind of impact a rift might have.
Friendships and Working Relationships Could Clash on ‘Chicago P.D.’
To complicate matters, however, serious promises have been made on both sides. Burgess’s adopted daughter Makayla is an anchor for Ruzek, with Burgess naming him guardian in the event of her death. And if you ask LaRoyce Hawkins, Atwater wouldn’t let anything get in the way of that obligation.
“They’re two of his best friends, and so he’ll always be there to help. There’s no way in the world that Atwater will leave Ruzek alone with that kind of responsibility if push comes to shove, and there’s no way that he would leave Burgess alone with that kind of responsibility,” Hawkins told TVLine. “So I think Atwater assumed responsibility, regardless of whether it’s on paper or not, because that’s just the kind of guy he is.”
No matter how the second-to-last episode of Season 8 plays out for “Chicago P.D.,” we can be sure of one thing. The only way to know what happens is to tune in. And all of you dedicated fans out there will be pleased to know that in February 2020, NBC renewed “Chicago P.D.” for three more seasons. So there will be plenty more of “Chicago” to explore after the next few weeks.
The upcoming episode will air Wednesday, May 19 on NBC at 9:00 Central.
