One of the more complicated and realistic relationships on Chicago PD is the relationship between Adam and Burgess. The duo has had their ups and downs throughout the series, but they have kept at it. Patrick John Flueger, who plays Adam on the program, sees the relationship between and Burgess as an “incredibly adult” one.

Flueger said, “I feel like they have an incredibly adult relationship. I think that adult relationships are not what you see in movies. It’s not what you see reading storybooks. It’s a little more complicated than that. You got to give and then you got to take and you got to push and you got to pull. And I kind of love that they’re telling that storyline for us. But you know, it’s not going to get any less complicated. They have very complicated lives, because of their jobs. And because they work together in those very complicated and dangerous jobs.”

Life is more complicated than what we see in the movies and TV, generally. Flueger likes working with this dynamic because it’s complicated and messy. It’s a real perspective on how adult relationships work where this a lot of give and take between the two. It is not as simple as what many expect it to be, especially when watching a TV show like Chicago PD.

Adam and Burgess work together on the force. The messiness and the potential for problems will never subside while that dynamic is in ply and Flueger recognizes that.

How Does Adam See Burgess on ‘Chicago PD’

We know how Flueger sees the relationship. That it is an adult relationship that is open about how complicated their relationship will always be. But how does Adam, the character he plays, see Burgess of Chicago PD? What does he think of her?

Flueger said, “I think Burgess’ strength is in her heart, you know. She feels things very deeply. And that’s where she comes from, whereas Ruzek’s strength is in his conviction. And those things don’t necessarily always match up. I think ’til the day they die, if they end up together, if they have a million children together, it is going to be constantly… at the end of the day, they’ll end up you know, butt-butt-butt[ing heads] and then, you know, come together at the end of the day. That’s how I see it.”

There is mutual respect there. Chicago PD star Adam sees strength in Burgess with her heart-first mentality while Adam is more a head-driven guy. This difference will never disappear in Flueger’s estimation as the two will bicker back and forth constantly because they are wired completely differently. Still, that does not mean the relationship cannot last on the show going forward, it will just be complicated.
