“Chicago PD” has had a lot of things go on in its 9 season run. Currently, Halstead is trying to decide if he’s going to sell his boss or his girlfriend down the river for Roy Walton’s murder. The FBI is breathing down his neck about it. Meanwhile, Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess are still trying to figure out how their relationship is going to pan out.

But Ruzek actor Patrick John Flueger has hope for the season. In an interview with Starry Mag, Flueger spoke about the themes of the seasons. He said that one season’s theme was “reform,” while season 9’s theme is “home,” according to Starry Mag. Makes sense; on a romantic level, Ruzek and Burgess are trying to figure out how they fit together. Also, Upton and Halstead are engaged. They’re home to each other, and are trying to figure out how to save that home from its demise.

There’s also the fact that Burgess adopted Mikayla at the end of season 8. She gave Mikayla a literal home after her living situation wasn’t working out.

“These guys [are] trying to make themselves better lives outside of work,” Flueger said of the theme. “Chicago PD” is getting personal with its characters, letting them experience things, make mistakes, and build their lives up. Burgess, Ruzek, Atwater, Upton, Halstead, even Voight. When it comes down to it, these characters are going to know what and what is home, and family, and what can’t be trusted.

‘Chicago PD’: Patrick John Flueger Describes Ruzek and Burgess Relationship as ‘Incredibly Adult’

Ruzek and Burgess have been going through it all throughout “Chicago PD.” They’ve had their extreme ups and downs along the way, and are currently trying to figure out where they stand in their relationship.

Patrick John Flueger describes their relationship in a very poignant way, saying, “I feel like they have an incredibly adult relationship. I think that adult relationships are not what you see in movies. It’s not what you see reading storybooks. It’s a little more complicated than that.”

Ruzek and Burgess have the complicated aspect down to a science. They’ve been struggling to be together since season 1; their relationship involved an engagement not to each other, then an engagement to each other, then a miscarriage, and a whole bunch of on-again-off-again stuff in between.

Flueger continued, “You got to give and then you got to take and you got to push and you got to pull. And I kind of love that they’re telling that storyline for us. But you know, it’s not going to get any less complicated. They have very complicated lives, because of their jobs. And because they work together in those very complicated and dangerous jobs.”
