Tracy Spiridakos is a fan favorite on Chicago PD. But even though she seems like an on-screen natural, her series regular job wasn’t just handed to her.
Since 2014, Spiridakos has been playing Hailey Upton, a clever Intelligence Unit detective who is the fiancé’ of Jay Halstead and friend of many. The 25-year-old is one of the series top-billed actresses. And honestly, the show wouldn’t be as interesting without her.
But surprisingly, when Tracy Spiridakos scored her part on the One Chicago franchise, she was only promised three episodes.
As the actress recounted to Jazz Tangcay of AwardsDaily, she had to work hard to win the hearts of Chicago PD fans before becoming a series regular.
“[The part] came through as an audition that my agents got for me,” she said. “I put myself on tape for the part. And it came through as a three-episode arc with the potential to stay. At the end of season four, as we were heading into five, they let me know that I’d be coming back.”
Hailey Upton and Hank Voight are In Trouble on ‘Chicago PD’ and it May Affect Kevin Atwater in Upcoming Episodes
Quite a bit is going on with the character of Chicago PD this season. But nothing compares to the mess that Detectives Upton and Voight have gotten themselves into.
At the end of Chicago PD’s eight-season, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) hunted down a criminal who nearly killed a brother in blue. During a chaotic and intense confrontation, things get dangerous and the two kill the criminal. Fearing for their own freedom, the pair covers up the murder during the season finale.
Now that we’re two months into season nine, the future is starting to look murky for Voight and Upton. And it looks like Kevin Atwater may get pulled into their drama.
At this point in the story, Atwater is noticing that something is up with Voight and Upton. And he can’t help but get involved.
“There are familiar feelings of secrecy and intensity that he’s noticing between people in his unit that he doesn’t know how to define yet,” Hawkins added.
“The things that he’s investing in have nothing to do with that,” the actor said of his character. “Just in case he can’t be seen with these people.”
The actor finally added that in a station, most cops have secrets. And his Chicago PD characters are no different.
“We got our dirt,” the actor admitted. “We are not a clean unit.”
