The news of the death of Saturday Night Live alum Norm Macdonald shocked the entertainment world on Tuesday, Sept. 14. After this sad news came to light, many other comedians shared their thoughts about their late colleague.
One of the comedians who paid tribute to Norm Macdonald following the 61-year-old’s death was popular comedian and late-night host Conan O’Brien. O’Brien, who also spent years working at Saturday Night Live, shared his thoughts about Macdonald via his Twitter account.
Like most people, O’Brien was also shocked and hurt by Macdonald’s death. “I am absolutely devastated about Norm Macdonald,” O’Brien shared.
Next, O’Brien praised Macdonald for his comedic talents and the perspective the late star brought to his work. “Norm had the most unique comedic voice I have ever encountered and he was so relentlessly and uncompromisingly funny,” the late-night host also shared.
O’Brien also said that Macdonald had the ability to make him laugh like no one else. He also expressed his thoughts about how the loss of Norm Macdonald will impact the comedy world. “I will never laugh that hard again. I’m so sad for all of us today,” O’Brien also said.

Unsurprisingly, Conan O’Brien wasn’t the only famous fan of Norm Macdonald’s who paid tribute to the late comedian after learning about his death.
Another one of these famous fans is comedian and former “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart. Like O’Brien, Stewart also paid tribute to Macdonald in a tweet. And also like O’Brien, Stewart praised Macdonald for his talent to make people laugh like no one else.
“No one could make you break like Norm Macdonald. Hilarious and unique. F*** cancer,” Stewart tweeted Tuesday afternoon.
Norm Macdonald Lost His Long Battle With Cancer at the Age of 61
Norm Macdonald reportedly passed away from cancer. He had battled the illness for nine years.
However, he chose to keep that battle out of the public eye during those years. He reportedly decided to do so in order to prevent his loved ones and fans from looking at him differently. In her comments about the late comedian, his longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra talked about his decision with Deadline.
“He was most proud of his comedy. He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him,” Hoekstra explained.
Hoekstra also shared some insight into how Norm Macdonald approached his comedy during his career.
“Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly,” she added.
Macdonald’s tenure on Saturday Night Live lasted from 1993 through 1998. While he did appear in skits, he is remembered by most as the anchor of the popular “Weekend Update” part of the show. He was the anchor of “Weekend Update” for three seasons.
