The country music industry just isn’t the same without it’s women.
A video clip available thanks to Entertainment Tonight (ET) might best express that. Female country music stars held forth about what it’s like to be a woman in the country music industry.
“I mean, the guys, they’re great, and they clean up nice and all that,” Carrie Underwood offered.
“I always say it takes a team of professionals and several hours, for me, to get me lookin’ like this,” McBride said, gesturing at herself.
“Ditto,” McEntire chimed in.
The women agree there is more pressure on them to keep up appearances than to sing well. And they said the guys, while great, don’t necessarily bond in the same way country women do.
Underwood said it was particularly tough for her to fit into the country music industry as a pop star fresh out of “American Idol.”
“It was kind of difficult when people – I would read things, and people would write about it, and like, well, Nashville will never accept her, ’cause she didn’t work her way up,” Underwood said. “I was kind of like, I have to prove myself every time I take that stage. So I honestly think it made me better.”
The women were featured on the CBS special “Girls’ Night Out,” focusing on the superstar women of country. CBS taped the special after the 2011 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards.
In a more recent interview, McBride praised Underwood effusively. The remarks came ahead of Underwood’s female country singers medley at the 2020 ACM Awards. The medley featured McBride’s song “Girls Like Me.”
“Carrie is such a great singer and performer,” McBride said. “For her to choose me to be in that company is so, it’s just a real honor and something really cool.”
