When news first broke that members of the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation team were returning this fall in the brand-new series reboot, CSI: Vegas, fans were beyond excited.

The original series ran from 2000 until 2015. And for fans of the CBS investigative series, the series gave us some of the greatest characters on television.

However, there are some who didn’t quite catch the original series. And they never really had the chance to get to know these characters before this reboot came about.

Incredibly, one of those people is CSI: Vegas’s own Paula Newsome; the actress who plays the newest head of the CSI laboratories, Maxine Roby.

“I have to say, I was living under a rock at that time,” Newsome told Parade Magazine when asked if she had watched the hit series during the original run.

“I didn’t watch it, I just didn’t get to it,” the actress continues.

‘CSI: Vegas’ Star Learned All About Grissom and Sidle Very Quickly

While Paula Newsome didn’t quite get the whole CSI: Crime Scene Investigation popularity in its original days, she was quickly filled in on the important points of the series when she landed the role of CSI: Vegas’s Maxine Roby.

“My sister was a huge fan of it,” Newsome says. “When I told her I got the job, she was more interested in whether Gil and Sara were coming back more than this new job I got.”

The new series reboot takes place in today’s time, after the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation characters moved on. And now, the CSI: Vegas laboratories are being run by a whole new set of people.

However, the current CSI team finds themselves facing a serious threat, and they quickly reach out to former CSI investigators Gil Grissom (William Peterson) and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) for help.

A Threat Continues To Challenge All The ‘CSI’ Cases

As it turns out, another former CSI agent, David Hodges (Wallace Langham) has been accused of tampering with evidence.

This, of course, threatens the very base of the series. If the evidence isn’t credible, it could overturn every single one of the CSI’s cases from the time.

Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle connect with Maxine Roby almost immediately as they work together to prove that their laboratory’s evidence is sound. Even if the team’s leader must bend a few rules along the way to do so.

“Maxine is a bit of a rule-breaker,” Newsome says of her CSI: Vegas character.

“But she’s the only one who gets to do that!” the actress explains; noting that for Roby, it’s important her team follow all the rules down to the letter.

“Other people can’t break the rules,” Newsome says.

“It’s like, ‘Don’t you know the rules?’ But she is willing to bend the rules in order to make sure that the lab is protected,” Newsome explains. “So, she’s a closet rule breaker.”
