‘Dallas’ Star Larry Hagman Defended Tripping on LSD, Described it as ‘Such a Profound Experience’

Larry Hagman talks about a Dallas Daze. One of the stars of the popular TV show was an advocate for LSD.

During an interview with Rick Doblin, Hagman was asked about the controversial topic of writing about using LSD, a psychedelic drug, in his autobiography Hello Darlin’: Tall (And Absolutely True) Tales About My Life.

“I didn’t write the book to sell the book, but to tell my experiences,” says the Dallas actor.

Larry Hagman’s Revealing Autobiography

Hagman reacts in an honest way when answering the question. He explains to Doblin how much LSD changed his life for the better. Larry felt like excluding his experiences with LSD from his book wasn’t factual and didn’t truthfully tell his stories.

“There was never any thought of not including it,” says Hagman. “LSD was such a profound experience in my life that it changed my pattern of life and my way of thinking and I could not exclude it.”

Hagman accepts that the truthfulness in his book will probably hurt his reputation.

The ‘Dallas’ Star’s Introduction To Hallucinogens

Previous to taking acid (LSD), Larry states that he tried going to a psychologist for a few years to no avail. After a time he decided to quit smoking and taking a prescribed amphetamine prescription. He never truly thought about addiction or the damage it was causing his body until he began to suffer from terrible symptoms of withdrawal.

“I was having spells of anger and depression, like you go through when you quit smoking. Quitting those two drugs put me in a state when one day, on the set, I started crying… I was like exploding, or imploding, and every kind of impurity in my body was leaving my body,” Larry Hagman explains the pain that he felt.

A friend told him that he needed to “drop acid” so he began to look for it while at Crosby, Stills, & Nash concert. He claims that David Crosby gave him around 25 pills, and advised him to only take one. Of course, he and his friend didn’t do just one.

“I was backstage at a performance one time with Crosby, Stills & Nash and I was talking about it to David Crosby. David handed me a handful of little pills. He says this is LSD. It was the best going around at that time,” claims Larry.

Hagman Experiences Benefits of LSD

Hagman explains his first psychedelic LSD trip in vivid detail. His memory of the event apparently changed his life and way of thinking. He feels as though he had understood the meaning of life and learned not to fear death. He has imprinted that experience in his brain.

During the Vietnam War is when he says was his psychedelic period. He also states that he has dabbled in other psychedelics, including mushrooms and tried peyote, once. “Never again,” he says. The experience felt overwhelming, causing him to want to stick to the LSD.

Larry Hagman speaks on all of his experiences with the drug with joy and passion. He has claimed tripping LSD erased his fear of death. When asked about that belief by interviewer Rick Doblin, he gave a thought-provoking response.

“Totally, absolutely gone from my life, at this stage,” Hagman states. “I don’t know what it’s gonna be when that moment comes. You can’t ever predict that, but I don’t fear it now.”
