Twins premiered in December of 1988 and it was hit. The critics didn’t go crazy over it, but audiences filed in to see it. The pairing of Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger was just too tempting for anyone to pass up. Recently, DeVito revealed that the classic buddy comedy is finally getting a sequel.

According to Screenrant, Twins pulled in more than $216 million at the box office. In today’s money, that’s over $505 million. Instead of taking a salary, Danny DeVito, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and director Ivan Reitman chose to take a 40% share of the box office returns. This gamble resulted in the biggest payday for all three of the filmmakers. Now, they’re hoping to recapture that box office magic with Triplets.

The Twins sequel will see Danny DeVito joining Reitman and Schwarzenegger once again. They’ll add comedian Tracy Morgan to round out the Triplets cast. This is a relatively new development. Universal Studios originally announced the follow-up in 2012. At that time, they tapped Eddie Murphy to play the third brother. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case any longer.

The original film centered on the differences between Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Their size and demeanor in the movie are night and day, making it hard to believe that they’re twins. Adding a person of color to the sibling group will crank that contrast up a notch.

Recently, Danny DeVito sat down with Forbes to talk about his new DC Comics project, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and more. At one point, he confirmed that Triplets will start filming in February of 2022.

Danny DeVito Talks ‘Triplets’

Danny DeVito was discussing his desire to revisit his role as the iconic villain The Penguin from Batman Returns. Unfortunately, that doesn’t sound like it will happen any time soon. However, he was able to confirm that Triplets is coming relatively soon.

About the upcoming Twins follow-up, DeVito said, “I’ve kept in touch with Ivan and Arnold over the years and it’s going to be a joy. I can’t wait to do it.” The Sunny star went on to say that the sequel is a long time coming.

Looking forward to working on the sequel, Danny DeVito said, “We’re going to have some fun and we have Tracy Morgan also in it and I’m excited about that.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m already sold on Triplets. Ivan Reitman directed some of the best films of the 80s including Ghostbusters, Kindergarten Cop, and Stripes. Arnold Schwarzenegger is always entertaining, especially in his comedic roles. On top of that Danny DeVito and Tracy Morgan are top-shelf comedic actors. In short, Triplets is packed to the brim with undeniable talent and will be, at the very least, a fun movie to watch.
