Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime tomorrow, November 7. It’s been eight years since Dexter fans have had a chance to see Michael C. Hall portraying the impossibly good-hearted serial killer. Hall talked about what it was like to reprise his role in the new take on the fan-favorite show.

Art imitates life. In many ways, Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan character is an artist when it comes to killing. He is discerning, choosing to kill only those most of society would see as bad people. Well, Dexter: New Blood picks up Dexter’s story 10 years after leaving Miami and his serial killing days behind him.

Likewise, Michael C. Hall is eight years removed from the character he plays. So not only does Dexter Morgan need to overcome some rustiness, but so too did the actor portraying him. Fortunately, Hall told USA Today that it didn’t take much doing to get the hang of the character again.

“I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect. It’s not something I’ve ever done before – doing something for eight years, taking eight years away from that, and then doing it again. But he still felt familiar to me. He was still there. It was eerie how easy it was to slip back into it,” said Hall.

For Hall, getting back into character was like riding a bike. But he may have given some details about the premiere of New Blood away by describing the actions his character takes.

There are going to be hiccups when you reengage with anything – whether it’s shooting a bow and arrow, killing bad guys, or making an omelet. If you don’t do something all the time, it will take time to get up to speed,” Hall continued.

We suppose it’s not much of a secret; Dexter is obviously going to kill some people. That’s what he does.

Michael C. Hall’s On-Screen Sister Was His Real-Life Wife

From 2008 to 2011, Michael C. Hall was married to Debra Morgan actor Jennifer Carpenter. Dexter fans will undoubtedly remember one of his final acts, that of taking his comatose sister off of life support. In Dexter: New Blood, Debra lives in Dexter’s conscience. As a result, Jennifer Carpenter is signed on for all 10 episodes of Season 1.

She talked about her marriage to Michael C. Hall and how the two would discuss the eventual return of the series.

“The Dexter of it all would always come up,” said Carpenter. She went on to describe what it was like to watch Hall become the character again after all these years.

“It was just strange to be looking at this character Dexter again in the flesh because I kept thinking it shouldn’t be physically possible. It was like looking at a corpse,” she continued.

Dexter: New Blood will premiere tomorrow, November 7, at 9 p.m. ET. You can also watch with a subscription to Showtime’s streaming app.
