by Keeli Parkey

During his many decades spent entertaining people and making them laugh Dick Van Dyke has earned millions of fans. You can count one of the most powerful people in the world on the list.

That fan is President Joe Biden. And, according to The Hill, Biden recently gave the legendary funnyman a very special greeting this week. On Thursday (May 20), Van Dyke arrived at the White House as part of the activities surrounding the Kennedy Center Honors.

There was a reception for the honorees at the famous residence on that day. And, according to Dick Van Dyke, President Biden did more than just shake his hand or give him a welcoming hug. What the president did was much more dramatic.

“I walked into the Oval Office, and the president … got down on one knee,” Van Dyke said.

Of course, the funnyman had to add a joke to his comments. “Now I expect that from everyone,” he joked.

When you think about it, after the career he has had, Dick Van Dyke just might deserve it.

President Biden’s unique greeting might have caught the 95-year-old Van Dyke off guard for more than one reason. You see, the actor supported Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont as the 2020 Democratic Presidential nominee. The actor even appeared at a rally to show his support for Sanders’ presidential campaign.

Garth Brooks Joins Dick Van Dyke, Others as Kennedy Center Honors Recipients

The annual Kennedy Center Honors recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the performing arts during their lives and careers.

In addition to Dick Van Dyke, country music icon Garth Brooks, folk singer Joan Baez, artist, choreographer and actress Debbie Allen, and violinist Midori will also be recognized this year.

Brooks expressed his excitement to be receiving the prestigious honor.

“Everybody knows my sister was probably the greatest influence on me, music-wise,” Brooks said. “I wanted to be her when I was a kid, ’cause she was always so cool. And Joan Baez is, like, (a)major influence for my sister. So to sit in the same booth with Miss Joan is going to be friggin’ awesome.”

Unsurprisingly, Garth Brooks was also happy to be alongside Dick Van Dyke.

“I don’t know how you get any cooler than that,” he also said. “So, this is going to be a fun, fun weekend.”

The ceremony for the honors was held on Friday (May 21). According to the organization’s website, the ceremony is typically held in December. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was rescheduled for May 2021.

This week’s ceremony was the 43rd annual Kennedy Center Honors. A recording of the event will air on Sunday, June 6. It will air on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET. It will also be available for streaming on Paramount+.
