Earlier this month, we found out that Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson was set to deliver the eulogy for ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill at his funeral. And in the latest episode of Robertsons’ Unashamed podcast, he shared with us exactly what he said.
Dusty Hill passed away back on July 28. The family has yet to release a cause of death for the famous bass guitar player, but he was noted as having a few medical issues prior to his death. In the latest episode of Unashamed, Phil Robertson and his son Jase Robertson talk about how they met ZZ Top. He also shares the speech he gave at Dusty Hill’s funeral.
“I said, ‘Peter said that Dusty had just departed from his tent. A temporary tent — our bodies — he’s departed from that biblically speaking, and his soul is with the lord. Well, his soul and spirit is in heaven but his body is asleep.'”
In an earlier episode of the podcast, Robertson explained it was Dusty Hill’s widow who asked him to speak at the funeral. And after flying out to Houston where the ceremony was held, Robertson did just that. That’s when Robertson pulled out his trusty bible and read a verse from 1st Thessalonians.
“So I just quoted them, ‘Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope,'” Robertson said.
The Duck Dynasty star said that he wasn’t being “low-key” when he read from the bible. As a matter of fact, it was the quite the opposite. He said that he actually had to “raise his voice.”
“I was tellin’ these people about this, and I was not doing this in a low-key manner,” he said. “I raised my voice.”

ZZ Top Appeared on an Episode of Duck Dynasty
We all know that Phil Robertson is a devout Christian. He is a member of and an elder at the White’s Ferry Road Church of Christ in West Monroe, Louisiana. But not all Duck Dynasty fans know that Dusty Hill from ZZ Top actually appeared on an episode of the popular show.
Phil Robertson and Dusty Hill were close friends. That’s evident since it was Robertson who gave the eulogy at Hill’s funeral. But the two had actually only met a couple of times. One of those times, however, was when ZZ Top appeared in the final episode of Duck Dynasty. The show ran from 2012 until 2017.
It was only fitting that for the final episode of the show, ZZ Top performed their hit song, “Sharp Dressed Man.” That also served as the Duck Dynasty theme song. And to have things come completely full circle, Phil Robertson has admitted that he wants ZZ Top to be played at his funeral.
