Duck Dynasty’s Bella Robertson Fires Back at Critics Saying She’s Too Young to Marry

by Halle Ames

Ah, yes. The argument as old as time. How old is old enough to marry? Well, frankly, it’s none of our business, however, critics are blasting Duck Dynasty’s 18-year-old Bella Robertson for being too young to wed.

As the youngest child of Willie and Korie Robertson, many people thought when she recently said yes to her boyfriend of six months, Jacob Mayo, 21, that she was moving too fast. At 18-years-old, Bella Robertson recently graduated high school and is a freshman in college at Liberty University.

In an interview with ET from December 4th, Bella Robertson defends her decision to marry, saying it’s relatively common where she is from.

“I think in the south, so many people get married so young like my parents got married at 18. My brother got married at 18. My grandparents married at 18. Like, I think it’s very common around here. So it really didn’t like shock me too much about my age.”

The proposal isn’t out of the blue. Mayo and Robertson have been friends for a while and then dated for six months. In addition, the two spent their whole quarantine together when Mayo came back from college.

“I’d say I knew he was the one right when we started dating, but we’ve been friends for a long time,” Robertson said, according to Pop Culture. “I think a lot of people want to say, like, ‘Oh my gosh, they’ve only been dating for six months.’ But we have known each other for so long. And since quarantine is like dog years, we’ve been in quarantine the whole time we’ve been dating, and we’re together all the time.”

Bella Robertson does admit that her fiancé wasn’t very secretive about the engagement. He had asked Robertson’s parents for their blessing and his sister, who is also Bella’s best friend, about ring types.

“I knew it was coming at some time soon, but I didn’t know exactly when,” she said.

The happy couple says they will start wedding planning after Christmas, but the location will be in Louisiana.
