Dukes of Hazzard is well known amongst its fans for break-neck chase scenes, huge jumps, and all of the other stunts performed on the show. But there were some stunts that even the show’s two leading stars wouldn’t do.
John Schneider and Tom Wopat were the main stars of the Dukes of Hazzard. They played the handsome Duke boys, Luke, and Bo Duke, respectively. The show went on to become so successful that it was one of the highest-rated TV shows on the air. One of the reasons it was so successful was all of the awesome stunt and chase scenes.
In a 2013 sit down with the stars of the show, Wopat admitted that they didn’t do all of the show’s stunts. There were some that he would not do, just like there were others that Schneider wouldn’t do.
“We did the physical stuff. The fist fights and everything,” Wopat said.
Then, Schneider turns to Wopat and says, “You would do the up-high stuff. I wouldn’t do that, it scared me.”
Wopat replies, “He wasn’t a climber.”
“No,” Schneider says back. “You were a roofer. So, Tom would go up on the roof for me, and I would swim for him. There was a swimming episode I had to go in and wrestle an alligator. It was so funny. So, Tom’s [character] Luke is trying to be good to the girl. The girl falls in, I jump in and save her, and she gets back in the boat and hugs you.”
That moment was a “Why I oughta…” one for Schneider without a doubt. You can watch the entire interview with the Dukes of Hazzard stars down below:
Even though the popular action-comedy show went off the air in 1985, fans on the internet are still talking about it to this very day.
“This is why the show worked so well,” one fan commented on the Youtube video. “They are all nice people who are actors without a chip on their shoulders. Most actors are snobbish and feel as though they are the center of attention. Thanks for the good memories.”
“They are awesome! I love them all. I watch them every night,” another follower wrote.
All of the ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Chases and Jump Scenes Were Performed by Stunt Drivers
Even though John Schneider and Tom Wopat performed their own fight scenes, it was a group of talented stuntmen and women who performed the daredevil chases and jumps we remember from the show.
In fact, the Dukes of Hazzard stunt team was responsible for all of the fancy driving. It was them who executed the patented “bootlegger” turns, and them who drove in the break-neck chase scenes.
Thankfully, the team of professionals never had anyone hurt while filming a Dukes stunt. However, there was one freak accident involving a truck filming background scenery which led to a death on set.
