On Dukes of Hazzard, John Schneider portrayed a small-town American that always found himself in a new type of trouble. The show gave viewers a sense of pride for their slower-style lives and tight-knit communities, and since then, Dukes of Hazzard has become a symbol of American pride, itself. Even off the show, the actor behind Bo Duke embodies these qualities and celebrates what its means to be a citizen in this country.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Schneider explained what exactly makes him proud to be an American.

“The ability or opportunity to pursue your definition of happiness. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – they are at the foundation of our country,” the Dukes of Hazzard star shared. “That’s why people from all over the world are trying to come to this country. I do believe we are the city on a hill. We are the living example of a free society.”

Because of this, Schneider also believes that we have a responsibility to remove religion from “public platform” because it goes against the qualities of a “free society.”

He continued, “We are not free to show praying hands and mention the word ‘God’ on a public platform. We’ve got to eliminate that.”

‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Star Shares Thoughts Regarding National Anthem

Of course, a huge point of controversy within the country has been about our flag and the national anthem. These are two aspects that Schneider holds close to his heart and feels that all Americans should celebrate. In fact, he regularly reminds people about the meaning behind the words in “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“The last lyrics of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ are ‘And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave, over the land of the free and the home of the brave,'” the Dukes of Hazzard star explained. “I tell people that is up to us. It’s not going to happen on its own. I believe freedom is something that is maintained and achieved. Our national anthem reminds us of that.”

He also explained the impact that the national anthem has not only on our country but also the rest of the world. Schneider believes that the U.S. sets an example for free societies everywhere.

“Our flag must wave over the land of the free and home of the brave. It’s up to each one of us to make sure that remains,” he said. “The world is depending upon that. We are what people look up to as a free society. We are a country of opportunity, love, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That’s what’s so great about America. It gives the world something to strive for.”
