Earlier this month, Dwayne Johnson’s hit Netflix film “Red Notice” had the biggest opening weekend in the streamer’s history. Now, the cast and crew are talking about a potential sequel.

Rawson Marshall Thurber, the writer and director for the film, sat down with Collider a few weeks ago to talk about what could come next for the action hit. It contains both good news and bad news for fans.

“I’m not working on the script for a sequel,” Marshall Thurber starts out saying. But then he adds, “I’ve certainly been noodling with what I would do for a follow-up. And not to telltale out of school, but yeah, Netflix…we’ve been having those conversations.”

Meaning, Netflix saw how widely successful the film did and wants to potentially pursue a franchise. But a lot would have to happen to make that a reality.

First, as Steve Weintraub from Collider brings up, they’d have to work out the filming schedule for these big-name actors. Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds all keep super busy schedules. If they were to plan a filming schedule, they’d likely have to think a few years out at least. And then, of course, Marshall Thuber would have to actually write the script.

Which won’t be so simple. While people loved the huge plot twist at the end, it does set a certain precedent moving forward.

“I’ve never made a sequel before,” Marshall Thuber said. “If I were to make one for ‘Red Notice’ it’d be my first. And yeah, I mean I think when you set the bar at a certain height, the next one you want to try and clear it. And I think that relates to every element of the first movie.”

Dwayne Johnson Celebrates Success of ‘Red Notice’

It didn’t take long for Dwayne Johnson to hop on social media and celebrate his newest film’s success. Right after the premiere, Netflix revealed that the film had the biggest opening weekend in the streaming service’s history. But that’s not the only record “Red Notice” broke.

Johnson posted a video of himself on Instagram earlier this weekend along with some of the incredible milestones the film’s achieved so far.

“It’s a history-making RED NOTICE @teremana Thanksgiving weekend around the world,” Dwayne Johnson begins in his caption. “In just 11 days you’ve officially made RED NOTICE the BIGGEST @Netflix FILM EVER. Shattering all records across the board!!!”

He continued, “A global & cultural phenomenon that’s on its way to becoming the MOST WATCHED  @Netflix PROPERTY OF ALL TIME. Film & Television. Man, I’m stunned and humbled by this MASSIVE 92% AUDIENCE SCORE WORLDWIDE. Enjoy our film, my friends…”

That’s a huge accomplishment for Johnson and the cast and crew. Netflix has been making original property for almost a decade, so to have that kind of success in just two weeks is truly amazing.
