Cue the crying. Wolfgang Van Halen is making fans teary after the singer-songwriter posted a series of photos alongside his late father and rock icon, Eddie Van Halen.

On Saturday, the 29-year-old tweeted the snaps, giving fans a peek into the close relationship he shared with his father. The two musicians had a strong bond with one another, and being able to perform together only added to that bond.

After his father passed away on Oct. 6, 2020, Wolfgang Van Halen expressed his grief in the best way possible for him: through music. He released a new song, titled “Distance,” which appears on his debut album Mammoth WVH. Fortunately for Wolfgang, the song snatched the No. 1 spot on the Billboard “Mainstream Rock Airplay” chart. Wolfgang took to Instagram to announce the milestone and thanked his supporters.

“Our first single Distance is officially #1,” he wrote in the caption. “Thank you so much for listening, and thank you to the incredible @MammothWVH team.” He made sure to include a nod to his father, writing, “Wish you were here to see this, Pop.”

Wolfgang Van Halen On Debut Album: ‘This Music Is Me’

“Some days are better than others,” Wolfgang Van Halen said when asked about his grieving process. “The pain is still there always, but you just kind of figure out how to carry it a little better as time goes on.”

While the father and son shared a love for music, Wolfgang shared that while that will always keep them connected, it’s still difficult for him to keep living his life without remembering the loss. “We had such a close connection and now, for the rest of my life, there’s no way I’ll never be able to think about him no matter what I do, which is good, but also hurts a lot,” he said.

After Wolfgang released “Distance,” he accompanied it with a music video that acted as a sweet tribute to his father. The video for “Distance” served as a celebration of his father’s life and showed home video footage of him as a father. Wolfgang also shared that his parents never made him feel obligated to follow his parent’s footsteps in the entertainment industry.

“My parents were never like that with me growing up,” he said. “This music is me. I figured out who I was as my own artist through this whole process, he added. “I like to joke with my friends and everyone that I never went to college, but this was basically my own little college for me, was making this album and writing.”
