Ellen DeGeneres Reflects on Jeopardy Host Alex Trebek’s Death

Talk show host and actress Ellen DeGeneres is one of many celebrities using social media to reflect on the life of Alex Trebek. The Jeopardy host lost his battle to pancreatic cancer on Sunday at 80-years-old. DeGeneres took to Twitter to remember the Canadian-American television personality after learning of his death.

“Alex Trebek hosted Jeopardy for 36 years,” she writes. “What an incredible career and remarkable life. I’m sending love to his family and fans.”

In a statement to TMZ, a Jeopardy spokesperson says, “Jeopardy is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends.”

Trebek, a television mainstay for over three decades, has been battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer since announcing the news back in early 2019. He immediately started chemo after the diagnosis but made no plans to retire and continued hosting the show. Show officials say he taped shows until October 29 and has enough tapings to air through Christmas Day.

Trebek Honored by Past Players

Trebek recently began his 37th season with the show despite his medical condition. Earlier this year he hosted the “Greatest of All Time” tournament on primetime television. Ken Jennings, the winner of the tournament, put out several tweets on Sunday remembering Trebek as a “lovely and decent” man.

“Alex wasn’t just the best ever at what he did,” Jennings says. “He was also a lovely and deeply decent man, and I am grateful for every minute I got to spend with him.”

Jennings sent out another tweet offering condolences to his family and his Jeopardy family.

“Thinking today about his family and his Jeopardy! family,” Jennings writes. “Which, in a way, includes millions of us.”

Another famous Jeopardy alum, James Holzhauer, also shares his thoughts on the TV icon’s passing.

“It was one of the greatest privileges of my life to spend time with this courageous man while he fought the battle of his life,” he tweets. “You will never be replaced in our hearts, Alex.”
