Elvis Presley had a killer voice. His voice was deep as well as soulful. Because of this, he could milk every bit of emotion out of every song that he sang. At the same time, he looked good doing it. However, there are plenty of good-looking people in the world who can sing. In order to ascend to rock and roll royalty, Elvis had to go the extra mile. He had to be the total package. In short, he couldn’t be a one-trick pony.
Luckily, Elvis Presley was a consummate entertainer. He really knew how to whip the crowd into a frenzy. That combined with his, at the time, groundbreaking musical style made him the King of Rock and Roll. How did he drive the crowd wild? With his dance moves, that’s how. Those iconic moves combined with his vocal talent created a perfect storm that audiences couldn’t resist.
Earlier today the Elvis Presley Estate posted a photo of the King on stage doing his thing. In the caption, they explained what motivated him to dance the way he did.
The caption of the photo contains a quote from the man himself. About the motivation behind his dance moves, Elvis Presley said, “My manager told me they was hollerin’ because I was wigglin’ my legs. The more I did it, the wilder they went.”
Elvis Presley Talks About His Dancing
In today’s world, we see Elvis Presley’s dance moves as just that, a dance. However, when he was at the peak of his fame, many people found them scandalous. In fact, the public branded him “Elvis the Pelvis,” because they thought his dancing was suggestive.
The King hated that nickname, by the way.
He once said, “I don’t like them to call me Elvis the Pelvis. It’s the most childish expression I ever heard from an adult.” It wasn’t just that he thought the nickname was childish, though. Presley didn’t see what all the hubbub was about. About his dance moves, he once said, “My pelvis has nothing to do with what I do. I get rhythm from the music. I jump around to it because I enjoy what I’m doing.” He went on to say that he wasn’t trying to be vulgar or simulate sex. The King said, “I just do a lot of wigglin’ and quiverin’.”
