Sometimes, it’s hard to wrap your head around the magnitude of Elvis Presley’s fame. His impact on the world was so huge and enduring that it seems every moment of his life has become its own story. Every day in the life of the King could almost become its own epic tale.

This is especially true for Elvis Presley’s final days on Earth. For example, we know he was gearing up to go on tour. His former guitarist, James Burton, remembers exactly where he was when he heard the news. We even know what book the King was reading when he passed away. It was The Scientific Search for the Face of Jesus by Frank O. Adams. Likewise, we can all go to Graceland and view the final photo snapped of Elvis before he passed away. As it turns out, that photo is right next to the final car he drove, according to Express.

Someone snapped the final photo of Elvis Presley as he returned to Graceland. He had just come home from a late-night trip to the dentist. They took the picture at the gates of his Memphis mansion while he was in his custom 1973 Stutz Blackhawk III. The photo, as well as the car, are on display together at the Presley Motors Automotive Museum, just across the street from Graceland proper.

Elvis Presley’s Final Hours

The lucky photographer got the shot in the wee hours of August 16, 1977. It was literally hours before the King passed away.

It was near midnight in Memphis when the King returned to Graceland in his custom Blackhawk III. As he pulled up to the gates of his home, a photographer snapped his picture.

Then, he went inside and called his cousin, Billy Smith and his wife Jo. It was about 3:30 in the morning.  Elvis wanted to know if the couple would come over for a game of racquetball with him and his girlfriend Ginger Alden. Of course, they came right over.

After finishing a few games, Elvis Presley sat down at the piano in his sports building. Then, he sang the last songs he would ever sing. He did “Unchained Melody,” and “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.”

Around sunup, they all headed back to Graceland to call it a night. Elvis said goodnight to Lisa Marie Presley and headed to bed. He and Ginger slept until late in the morning.

Finally, around lunchtime, Elvis Presley’s body was found in the bathroom just off of his bedroom.
