They may have been ready for some football, but it seems Twitter wasn’t ready for a change. After ESPN announced Sept. 8 that the network would stop using Hank Williams Jr.’s “All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night” for its “Monday Night Football” theme song, social media lit up in protest.
Some expressed solidarity with the country icon.
Some got conspiratorial.
Some were just confused.
But most were less than pleased.
The reason for the change is that NFL officials think a song referencing “all my rowdy” friends may be out of place when played to an empty stadium. The NFL is allowing each team and their local officials to decide on whether to let fans attend games amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This means the number of fans allowed at each stadium will vary from team to team. For example, the Buffalo Bills announced they won’t have fans in seats for home games as they start the season. However, the Miami Dolphins plan to host as many as 13,000 fans for their home games.
“Monday Night Football” will replace Hank Williams Jr.’s iconic jam with Little Richards’ “Rip it Up.” A rowdy song just with fewer guests.
“Monday Night Football” returns next week on Sept. 14 with back-to-back games. The Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants face off at 7:10 p.m. EST, and then the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos play at 10:20 p.m. EST.
