Is this heaven? No, but it’s some pretty great television! Universal’s Peacock network has given baseball fans some great news. The studio has just announced that they have ordered a straight-to-series adaptation of the iconic baseball flick, “Field of Dreams.”
That’s right baseball fans, the hit film starring Kevin Costner will be coming to television. Hollywood Reporter has announced that the script for the series will soon be complete thanks to the creator of “The Good Place,” Mike Schur. Schur has taken on the task of adapting the iconic 1989 baseball flick into a scripted series.
“Field of Dreams” Series a “Perfect” Fit For Creator
This new series seems to be a perfect project for Mike Schur. Schur is described as “a noted baseball superfan.”
“’Field of Dreams’ is an iconic Universal film title from venerable producers Lawrence and Charles Gordon, that we could only have entrusted to Mike Schur,” noted Universal TV president Erin Underhill. “His talent, his love for baseball and his reverence for its themes make him the perfect choice to revisit this beloved film that evokes nostalgia and visceral emotion in so many of its fans.”
The announcement of the upcoming “Field of Dreams” television series comes less than a week after the first Major League Baseball game played at the historic filming site of the iconic 1989 film. “Field of Dreams” movie site sits just outside of Dyersville Iowa, a small northeast Iowa farming community.
The first-ever big league baseball game held in Iowa featured a match-up between the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox. The nail-biter of a game ended with New York falling to the White Sox 9-8. This win came after Chicago shortstop Tim Anderson’s history-making walk-off homer.
This much-anticipated game was the highest-rated MLB season matchup in a number of years. And, of course, “Field of Dreams” star, Kevin Costner made an appearance to kick off the history-making game.
The movie is based on a 1982 novel written by W.P Kinsella about Shoeless Joe Jackson. Shoeless Joe was a member of the “Black Sox” team of the Chicago White Sox; and the story that the 1919 World Series game was thrown in exchange for money.
An Iconic “All-American” Story
The original film starred Kevin Costner as a husband, father, and brand-new farmer. He is inspired by an unknown force to build a baseball field…because “he” will come.
The film is a memorable story about the relationship between a father and son. Against the all-American backdrop of Iowa cornfields. And, of course, baseball. The film also stars Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta (as Shoeless Joe), and Burt Lancaster.
According to reports, the upcoming Peacock network baseball drama will be a reimagined look. Staying true to the iconic film’s unforgettable mixture of family, baseball, Iowa, and the magic that the three bring together.
According to the recent Hollywood Reporter article, Schur will serve as both a writer and executive producer for the upcoming series.
