Chip and Joanna Gaines are a delightful, loving and very real couple on Fixer Upper.
It’s why their Magnolia brand became so valuable. You can’t fake that kind of authenticity. But when did the stars of Fixer Upper start their love affair? When did this sweet Central Texas love story begin?
Maybe it all started when a very young Chip walked into a Waco tire store and saw a photo of Joanna — aka Jo Jo — on the wall. Her dad owned the store. Joanna worked there part-time when she attended high school and then Baylor. She majored in broadcast journalism, so selling tires and scheduling appointments to fix flats weren’t permanent assignments.
Fixer Upper Star Said He Used to Make Up Reasons To Go To Tire Store
He told Waco TV station KWTX that he used to make up reasons to get his car fixed to run into Joanna. They officially met in 2001. And Chip was an hour late to their first date. He didn’t even call his future wife for a few months because he bet his friends on who would phone first. But sometimes being a silly idiot doesn’t stop folks from falling in love.
On another early date, Chip climbed to the top of a famous old magnolia tree on the Baylor campus. He snipped off a bloom and presented it to Joanna. Chip told that sweet story to his kids on an episode of Fixer Upper. It’s why the couple named their company Magnolia. And it’s why they plant a magnolia tree when they finish a project.
Joanna wrote in her book about her love for magnolias.
“It’s impossible to imagine that such a big beautiful thing could pop out of that tiny little bud,” Joanna Gaines wrote. “But it does. And that’s sort of what getting ‘discovered’ and sharing our lives on Fixer Upper feels like to us.”
“I have to wonder, if it was just a happy coincidence that we decided to name that shop Magnolia,” she wrote. “Or was it something more? Because it’s staggering to think just how much it has blossomed.”
Chip admits he was the first to fall hard for Joanna. But Joanna says her future husband won her over with his sincerity. Plus, she said he made her laugh. That’s what you see on every episode of Fixer Upper. If it was fake, people wouldn’t believe the show. And although the series is about renovating and redecorating older homes, it’s basically about the Gaines, their kids and their values.
So when did they get married? The Fixer Upper couple wed in Waco, May 21, 2003, right when the magnolias were in full bloom. The ceremony was at the Earle-Harrison House in Waco. It was a perfect setting for the future Fixer Upper stars, given that the home was built in 1857 and featured so much history.
The two started buying older homes and renovating them a month after the wedding. And that’s when Fixer Upper truly was born.
