Dawn Wells is one of the more iconic women to have ever graced a television set. She began playing Mary Ann Summer on Gilligan’s Island in 1964 and fell in love with the character.

During her time on the show, Dawn Wells portrayed one of America’s favorite characters. It is almost a shame to think that the show was canceled, but such were the wild days of 1960s television. However, for fans of Gunsmoke, it makes the cancellation easier to bear.

At the beginning of Gilligan’s Island, there was a lot to explore about the character. Over the course sitcom’s three seasons on the air, she got to expand her relationship with Mary Ann. One thing, in particular, that she really enjoyed about the show’s character was the dream sequences.

Gilligan’s Island used these dreams fairly often. Each character got to experience the dream sequences in their own ways. Oftentimes, the Castaways would have dreams about the problems that each character was dealing with.

Dawn Wells Talks About How Much She Enjoyed the Dream Sequences in “Gilligan’s Island”

Wells, in an interview from 2013, talks about how she thoroughly enjoyed each of the dreams. In particular, Mary Ann would use her radio soap opera to deal with her fears in Gilligan’s Island.

“We always liked the dream sequences. Being a cockney girl was kind of fun. The plots were incredibly stupid, but that makes me laugh. The entire time the show was on, I thought, ‘this is kind of corny,’ but you don’t have time to think about it, and you don’t have time to watch the other shows because you’re working. But now the show is on Me-TV, and I thought, ‘this is funny!’ How we’re all so larger than life, it is funny.”

Dream sequences were certainly new to television at the time. That being said, the way that Gilligan’s Island utilized those scenarios was incredible. It certainly is no wonder why Dawn Wells was such a big fan of the interesting scenes.
