Glee actor Naya Rivera is being remembered on the first anniversary of her death.
Naya’s mother Yolanda Previtire spoke with Good Morning America to honor her daughter’s memory. She said that she is taking everything one day at a time. Yolanda knows that her daughter wouldn’t want her to be sad in grief.
Yolanda said that waking up every morning is similar to a “restart button.” She has to shake off her feelings and relive the grief. Her mindset is “one foot at a time.”
Yolanda and Naya’s sister Nickayla called the time spent waiting to find the Glee alum “hell on earth.”
Now 5-year-old son Josey is being cared for by his father and Naya’s ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, and Nickayla.
“I knew right when it happened, right when we got him, I knew the role that I had to take,” Nickayla said. She revealed that he also sings almost every day, a passion that he got from his mother.
“He’s like a boy version of her in every sense of the word. His tenacity, his drive, in zeal, his adventure for life. He’s Naya in boy form,” Yolanda shared.
The Final Call
Yolanda spoke about her final memory with Naya. She FaceTimed her right before her tragic accident. Naya went missing on California’s Lake Piru on July 8, 2020. The mother and son rented a boat when she went swimming. A search and rescue operation concluded on July 13 when they found her body. She drowned at the age of 33.
“And we had a beautiful conversation,” Yolanda shared. “The sun was kissing her face and she was just beautiful. … She had a white, beautiful swimming suit on and she was glowing.”
Sadly, she saw that the waters were getting more “choppy” during the call. She mentioned that to her daughter before hanging up.
Luckily, she took screenshots of their call. The photos helped authorities locate the land and topography of where they were located. It ended up helping find her body.
