If you lose focus in the gold mining game for a second, disastrous results will likely follow. A few years ago, Gold Rush staple Rick Ness and his crew learned that the hard way when they got off to a late start in Ness’s first season on his own claim. Now, in the middle of a pandemic, Ness has found a rare opportunity to bounce back and turn in a season to remember.

With Season 12 of Gold Rush currently underway, Rick Ness reflected on his goals heading into the mining season.

In an interview with Movieguide, Ness explained his mindset given the complications of mining and filming during a global pandemic.

“I had one goal in mind, and that was redemption, and it would have been nice if everybody hadn’t been affected by COVID, and I’d had a full shot at it. But at that point, it didn’t matter. Redemption was all that was on my mind and I wasn’t going to take no for an answer. I was going after it.”

While COVID certainly didn’t help logistics, it did help Ness and his colleagues on Gold Rush in a significant way.

“This spring was one of the most frustrating parts of my life. I mean, I was at home, here in Brookfield, Wisconsin. I haven’t been home in April in nine years since I started doing this, and it was just bizarre. And the gold prices were going up, and fuel prices were just way down. That’s like the magic formula for my business. And so, to say it was frustrating is putting it mildly,” Ness continued.

So the pandemic has had its silver linings for those in the gold mining industry. It was more challenging for the crews to get going, but once they did, they stood to gain more than they have in years past.

‘Gold Rush’ Star Rick Ness Thinks Fans Are Going to Be Pleased with the Season’s Results

According to Ness, much of the pandemic-induced frustration is documented in the current season of Gold Rush. Despite the challenges, the time crunch led to some compelling situations for Rick Ness and his crew. At least, he hopes that’s the case.

“We powered through it and got back to our roots. I think people are going to like what they see. I mean, it’s just a dirty, hard nose kind of a season right here. We didn’t have a whole lot of time, we just had to just smash it out as fast as we could. And hopefully, everybody likes the results,” Ness continued in the interview.

Gold Rush airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET.
