‘Golden Girls’: Rue McClanahan Married for Sixth Time After Stating She Was Staying Single in 1986

As Blanche Devereaux on “The Golden Girls,” Rue McClanahan had the chance to play a woman whose skills with the opposite sex were to be envied. Blanche could get almost any man she wanted. She didn’t keep them, but that was no problem for her. The character happily moved on to her next conquest.

However even though McClanahan had her share of romances during her life, they did not end as easily as the ones her character had on the show. As well as she embodied Blanche, Rue was not like Blanche in that regard, according to reports.

Before her death on June 3, 2010, Rue McClanahan was married six times. That’s right, six times. Interestingly, after her fifth marriage ended in divorce, she vowed never to get married again. “The Golden Girls” actress shared this sentiment during a 1986 interview with PEOPLE.

Her fifth marriage ended in 1985. That marriage was to a man the article described as her “high school boyfriend.” His name was Tom Keel. Coming off this fifth failed marriage, McClanahan told the publication that she was done with the institution of marriage for good.

“The last one cured me,” she told PEOPLE in 1986. “I used to be a romantic, but no more.”

The article also addressed rumors that she was planning a sixth marriage at the time. According to said rumors, “The Golden Girls” star planned to get married to Tom Bish – her first husband – once again. That was not going to happen, McClanahan said.

“I don’t have any plans to marry Tom, or anyone, again,” she said. “If the tabloids want a story, I could make up one a lot better.”

However, as fate would have it, Rue McClanahan did get married one more time – even though she swore she never would. Love is unpredictable, after all.

In 1997, she married actor Morrow Wilson. According to his IMDb.com page, they were married from Dec. 25, 1997, until her death in June 2010 at the age of 76. However, according to Wikipedia.com, the couple had separated in 2009.

Here are a few details about McClanahan’s first five husbands. “The Golden Girls” star married Tom Bish in 1958. They divorced in 1959. Next, she married Norman Hartweg in 1959. They divorced in 1961. Next came a marriage to Peter DeMaio in 1964. This marriage ended in divorce in 1971. McClanahan’s fourth husband was Gus Fisher. They married in 1976 and divorced in 1981. She married Keel in 1985. They divorced in 1986.

McClanahan was born on Feb. 21, 1934. “The Golden Girls” originally aired from 1985 until 1992. Thanks to reruns, the show is beloved by fans of all ages to this very day. And, McClanahan’s sassy portrayal of Blanche Devereaux is a key reason why.
