Right now, “The Voice” coaches Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are the music industry’s iconic sweethearts. But when they first started dating, one of her good friends told them they were not made for each other.

Carson Daly Weighs In

Gwen Stefani recently appeared on the “Today” show, and during her appearance, “The Voice” host Carson Daly shared a story from early on in the couple’s relationship.

Daly, who calls Stefani one of his oldest friends, said he initially discouraged them from getting together.

“Five years ago, when you started to date Blake, you’ll remember this, we went back to your house, your old house in LA, and I sat you and Blake down in the kitchen,” Daly said. “And I said, ‘You guys, pump the brakes. This is not good. This is not going to work.’”

“And I looked at Gwen and I said, ‘You’re much, much too good for this guy,’” he added. “’You’re smart, you’re intelligent. You’re one of my oldest friends. And then there’s Blake.’”

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Through the Years

Stefani and Shelton first met in April 2014 on “The Voice,” according to a timeline compiled by Billboard. By November of that year, Stefani had posted a flirty Instagram picture of the two of them with the caption, “[Heart] him.”

Shelton divorced country star Miranda Lambert in July 2015. And in August, Stefani and former Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale followed suit.

In October 2015, Stefani and Shelton showed up at George Clooney’s Halloween party and then Jared Leto’s. They reportedly held hands and left together.

By November of that year, Shelton’s rep confirmed the two were dating. They had bonded over their shared ordeal of going through a divorce.

In February 2016, the couple made their red carpet debut at the 2016 Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty. And that May, they performed a duet of “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” at the Billboard Music Awards.

Through 2016 and 2017, the couple couldn’t stop talking about eachother in media interviews. By 2018, the wedding rumors had kicked in.

In October 2020, Stefani and Shelton finally got engaged. Shelton reportedly enlisted Stefani’s sons’ help with the proposal, and the duo announced their engagement on Instagram.

“Hey @gwenstefani thanks for saving my 2020… And the rest of my life.. I love you. I heard a YES!” Shelton wrote next to a photo of the couple kissing.

“@blakeshelton yes please!” Stefani wrote, sharing the same photo.
