Acting star, Alan Alda turns 85 today. Watch some of his most iconic onscreen moments.

Alan Alda has performed for the world since his movie debut in 1968. Alda starred in Paper Lion, a sports comedy based on the nonfiction book of the same name. During the movie, Alda played George Pimpton, a sportswriter who decides to try his hand at professional football. After a game of touch football with friends, Pimpton decides he’s going to try out for a spot on the Detroit Lions. Just a few years later, Alda displayed the diversity of his acting talents when he starred in the horror film, The Mephisto Waltz. During the film, Alda plays an aspiring musician who gets caught up in an occult-murder mystery.

Shortly after his film debuts, Alda landed the infamous role of Captain Pierce on the iconic show M*A*S*H. In celebration of the Hollywood icon’s milestone birthday, we’ve compiled a list of some of Alda’s best career moments.

Certainly, Alda is best known for this role in the television comedy series. Alda even cowrote and directed many of the episodes. Additionally, Alda won several Emmy Awards for his contributions to the show.

Alda returned to his comedy roots for his appearance on 30 Rock. He plays a potential long-lost father of Jack Donaghy.

When he played Senator Ralph Owen Brewster in The Aviator

We can’t make a list of best career moments without including Alda’s Oscar nod. Alda received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for his performance in The Aviator in 2004.
