Join us in wishing a happy birthday to “Three’s Company” star Richard Kline. The actor, known for his role as Larry Dallas on the hit show, turned 77 years old today. In honor of the big day, let’s take a look back at some of Jack Tripper’s best friend’s career.

Richard Kline is a New York City boy. He was born in 1944 and raised in Queens. After graduating from Queens College and getting his Masters of Fine Arts from Northwestern University, he served in Vietnam as a lieutenant in the Army. Kline was reportedly struck by lightning during his tour. Despite this, he made it through the war largely unscathed. And thankfully for us, because a world without Larry Dallas would have been a sadder world indeed.

The ‘Three’s Company’ Star’s Acting Career

Kline got his start in show business as a stage actor, performing with the Lincoln Center Repertory Company. After a few years of stageplays, Kline broke into TV acting with small parts on shows like “Serpico” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

In 1977, he got his big break as Larry Dallas on “Three’s Company.” He played the character for seven years while making guest appearances on other shows like “The Love Boat.” But the classically trained singer and stage actor didn’t make his Broadway debut until 1989 when he starred in the musical “City of Angels.” Through the 1990s and 2000s, Kline continued acting on Broadway, television, and in movies. He has appeared on shows like “Blue Bloods” as recently as 2020.

Richard Kline’s Iconic Role

His best-known role, however, is easily that of Larry Dallas on “Three’s Company.” The womanizing car salesman was Jack Tripper’s upstairs neighbor, and his questionable pursuit of women led to hilarity on countless occasions.

Larry Dallas’s name itself was the perfect example of willingness to bend his identity. The Greek character was born Lawrence Dalliapoulos. But because that was too hard to spell, he shortened it to Dallas.

According to IMDb, Kline’s Larry Dallas shares the distinction of being the only character to appear in “Three’s Company” and both of the show’s spin-offs, alongside John Ritter’s Jack Tripper.
