‘Home Improvement’ Star Patricia Richardson Learned One Major Lesson in Her Time on The Series

Patricia Richardson is seen as the outspoken and strong wife to Tim Allen’s character in the hit sitcom Home Improvement.

This was a critical aspect of the show. Patricia Richardson’s portrayal of Jill Taylor had to be witty and could give enough grief that she takes. Producers made sure Richardson was aware of that part of the character’s personality before she took the job.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 70-year-old actress explains Jill and Tim Taylor’s relationship on the show Home Improvement. Patricia Richardson says that the characters are in a constant power struggle within the family.

“You know we’ve got to have someone that challenged him and is as much a feminist as he is a masculinist,” reveals Richardson. “It has to be an equal struggle because he’ll seem abusive. If she’s not as strong as he is, he’s going to seem abusive. You know, we need that strength coming from you to fight back.”

Patricia Richardson Reveals Idea Behind the Show

Patricia Richardson said she was not only up for the job, but she was looking forward to it.

In addition, the experienced actress revealed the whole plotline for the series. Patricia Richardson said she kept that vital information in the back of her mind throughout her time filming Home Improvement.

“That’s what I want, yeah. What they told me that was really important and I kept in my mind through the entire eight years of the show and what I think is crucial to the show is that their idea of the show, which was, this is why men and women shouldn’t live together. The whole concept for the show is this is why men and women really shouldn’t live together, but what we are doing with the show is how they can.”

Patrica Richardson portrayed the perfect balance to Tim Allen in the series, doing her job at proving men and women, especially married ones with three kids, could live together. Their hilarious relationship made Home Improvement one of the most-watched in the United States from 1991 until 1999.

In fact, Richardson did such an excellent job at her strong role, the award nomination began to roll in. She was nominated four times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and on two occasions for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical.
