Both I Love Lucy and Lucille Ball are icons of American entertainment. The show changed the way Americans watch television. As a direct result of Lucy and Desi’s technical decisions, their hit sitcom was the first to have reruns. The iconic couple invented syndication. At the same time, they relocated the hub of broadcast television. Before the trailblazing couple came along, most TV shows were shot in New York. However, Desi didn’t want to move away from Hollywood. So, they shot the show there.
As for Lucille Ball, she was the first female CEO of a major production company. She earned this title after buying out Desi Arnaz’s shares of Desilu Productions. In short, the I Love Lucy star was a trailblazer and influence on countless future stars.
So, it makes sense that one of the most popular toy brands in the world would celebrate I Love Lucy and its star. Recently, Barbie released a line of commemorative dolls called the Tribute Collection. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that series will “pay tribute to visionaries whose incredible contributions have helped shape and impact culture.” Lucille Ball definitely fits that description.
Designer Bill Greening worked with the I Love Lucy star’s daughter Lucie Arnaz to develop the doll. Her insight helped the designer to capture the essence of the late comedian in the commemorative doll.
More About the I Love Lucy Barbie
This year marks milestones for both I Love Lucy and its star. The classic sitcom will turn 70 on October 15th. Lucille Ball would have been 110 on August 6th. On top of that, the biopic Being the Ricardos starring Nicole Kidman is currently in production at Amazon Studios. So, now is the perfect time to immortalize the TV icon in plastic.
The commemorative I Love Lucy Barbie is about 12 inches tall and has the features for which Lucille Ball was best known. Her bright red hair and ruby-hued lipstick are on full display. At the same time, the doll captures Ball’s elegant style. It features a replica of her enormous aquamarine engagement ring. Additionally, the doll’s outfit is straight out of the fifties. The gown is cobalt blue and boasts a fit and flare cut like the gowns that Ball favored at the time. Greening topped that gown with a white lace jacket. Silver heels and pearl earrings complete the doll’s vintage look.
What would a Lucille Ball doll be without a nod to I Love Lucy? With that in mind, Mattel included a Desilu Studios script along with the doll’s certificate of authenticity.
I Love Lucy fans can get the doll right now. In fact, Mattel released the doll on August 4th, two days before Lucille Ball’s birthday. The most surprising thing about the doll might be its price tag. You can take home Lucy and a slice of American TV history for just forty dollars plus shipping from the Mattel Creations website.
