There’s a piece of I Love Lucy trivia that gets passed around online that claims Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, is an episode of the show. But it’s not true. In fact, it’s such a pervasive rumor that even she believed that she was in the episode.
The episode is “The Ricardos Dedicate a Statue,” the last one the show film, Lucy pretends to be a Revolutionary War statue after she accidentally breaks the real one just before its unveiling. At one point in the episode, the camera pans across a group of children standing just in front of the statue. For decades, people — including Luci — said the family was in the shot.
Lucie Arnaz Explains How it Happened
Lucie Arnaz learned years later it wasn’t true. But she believed it for years, even telling people she was in the episode.
“… I was never in I Love Lucy, she told the Television Acadamy Foundation. “There is some misinformation that got into a book somewhere that continued to get into the Wikipedia’s of the world. But even I believed that my brother and I were the children standing in the scene in the last I Love Lucy show where she is the statue. … Well, they edited out that when they put it on television for years because they were to make the show’s shorter you know, and so finally, TV Land has the shows on in their entirety a few years ago.
“And I couldn’t wait to see this show so I could see that and there’s the scene. And there’s Desi and there’s some other little girl who was definitely not me. So, all these years they thought that was me because I was standing next to Desi I guess, but I was never on the ‘I Love Lucy’ show except in my mother’s uterus when she was pregnant with me during the pilot.”
Lucie was six weeks old when the show got picked up for a full series.
“Mom thought it would last a couple of weeks and we’d have some fun home movies,” she told TODAY. “But it took off — and they never really looked back.”
Lucie Arnaz would star in her mom’s hit show Here’s Lucy year’s later. And there is verifiable evidence she’s on that show.
