‘I Love Lucy’: Lucie Arnaz’s Other Potential Career Paths Would’ve Fit Ball Family Well

by Madison Miller

Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of “I Love Lucy” couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, followed in the famous footprints of her parents.

She has made a career out of being a performer, just like her father Desi. He was known for being a part of his music band, the Desi Arnaz Orchestra. He had a wonderful talent for music that actually impacted the way Americans perceived music and dance.

It was the “I Love Lucy” star that helped introduce the conga line to New York City. Eventually, his orchestra and brief Broadway experience would get him to the show. Even on the show, he incorporated his love for performing. He was the leader of a band at a local nightclub where he sang some of his most popular songs, such as a “Babalu.”

Product of ‘I Love Lucy’ Parents

In an interview with Cape Cod Times in 2016, Lucie Arnaz explained some of her “favorites” in life and what direction her career would have gone if not for performing.

“A director, a writer, a decorator, a teacher, the host of a talk show, a restaurant owner, a wedding planner, a child care director … There are many things that could fulfill me,” Arnaz said.

She’s just like the “I Love Lucy” stars after all. Lucille Ball was an incredibly talented actor, but she was far more than that. She was also a comedian, a model, a studio executive, and a producer. She may be most known for her adorable and hilarious character on the show, but Ball was far more than “I Love Lucy.”

Her work as an executive and a producer would actually help shape the future of television.

Many things fulfilled her, so she did many things.

Lucie Arnaz is similar. She has been an actress, singer, dancer, and producer so far in her life. Her first role in entertainment was on her mother’s “The Lucy Show” early in her life. She then had many smaller roles in TV and even had a very short-lived show of her own. Then she got into theater and performing, which is perhaps where her career has really felt most comfortable.

Lucie Arnaz Performing Roles

Some of her roles include “They’re Playing Our Song,” “My One and Only,” “The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True,” “Pippin,” and “Master Class.” In 2010, she also performed in and directed “Babalu: A Celebration of the Music of Desi Arnaz and his Orchestra.”

While performing, directing, acting, and music have all been a part of her life, Arnaz believes that she would have been open to more too. Although she has always helped carry on the legacy of her parents through dedicated performances and even a documentary, Arnaz still wants to be seen as her own individual person. She is not her “I Love Lucy” parents.

“But, I may never have done a single interview where I was not asked more questions about my parents than myself. It would be nice to have that happen someday. Hey, maybe it just did?!” Arnaz said to Cape Cod Times.

While Lucie Arnaz and her brother Desi Arnaz Jr. have followed the family path, they are also paving their own unique path in life.
