Recently fans got the news that there would be a new movie coming out that is based on the classic series, “I Love Lucy.”
The movie, called “Being the Ricardos,” will focus on one of the most iconic couples to ever grace the TV screen, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
The TV show “I Love Lucy” focused on Lucy creating elaborate plans and schemes. She was joined with her two friends and coupling, Ethel and Fred. At the end of the episodes, her husband (in real life as well) would find out about her schemes of the day. It usually came down to him saying, “Lucy, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!”
Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as the Ricardos
The dynamic Hollywood duo and the level of comedic moments in the show continue to make it one of the most popular sitcoms ever. Now, Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem will represent the two iconic characters on the big screen.
Of course, fans always have an issue with casting. It was to be expected with such an iconic pairing and show, odds are not everyone will be happy.
Kidman on Doing a Comedic Role
Some are complaining that although Kidman is an exceptional actress, she may not have the comedic qualities and abilities that Lucille Ball had. Despite people’s perceptions of her, she has been dying to get a shot at doing a comedic film. She is currently one of the most popular drama actors in the business.
“They always say I’m not funny … I’m willing to fall on my face, I’m willing to get back up again. I want to keep trying,” Kidman said at a panel about her role in “Top of the Lake.”
According to Chicago Tribune, Kidman has grown up with shows like “I Love Lucy.” She said that “the thing that makes me close to people is laughing with them, I love it.”
Now, Kidman is finally getting a shot in a comedy role. It is also a role that she always dreamed about.
Bardem Casting Controversy
As for Javier Bardem playing Desi Arnaz, fans are upset that they did not select a Cuba-born actor. Arnaz was born in Cuba and a lot of the show focuses on this as well. Bardem was born in Las Palmas, Spain.
Fans were hoping for more of an accurate representation of Desi’s true cultural background. Fans are claiming it is not proper Latinx representation and Hollywood has a tendency to pick actors from Spain in roles that should be filled by Latinx actors.
The movie written and directed by Aaron Sorkin is meant to take place during the one-week production of one episode of the show. The two will represent Desi and Lucy as they battle with personal and career issues. Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr, the couple’s children, are executive producers.
Production is not yet scheduled due to COVID-19. Also, both Kidman and Bardem do not have finalized contracts yet.
The show, however, seems to portray a lot of the behind-the-scenes drama involved in the show. The movie is not a recreation of Lucy and Desi’s acting. Rather, it is a look behind the curtain.
