The actor who famously said “Lucy!…” in the hit TV show almost went by a different name.

It’s almost impossible to think of Ricky Ricardo, the role Desi Arnaz famously played on the famous TV sitcom I Love Lucy, to go by any other name. However, that was almost the case.

Arnaz first created the name of Larry Lopez for his character’s identity. The name was changed due to the fact that the producers didn’t like the way “Lucy and Larry” rolled off the tongue. Thank goodness! It just wouldn’t be the same without “Ricky!”

Larry Lopez Instead of Ricky Ricardo? I Think Not

The character’s name was changed to Ricky Ricardo because the producers thought “Larry and Lucy” was a bad alliteration

The sitcom, airing between 1950 and 1957, featured Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as the main characters. They became Lucy and Ricky, skyrocketing to the top of fame during the sitcom’s run. It would be a completely different story had the producers not jumped in. Would “Lucy and Larry” sound the same? Of course not.

“I Love Lucy” and Lucy Loves Desi

The producers and actors embarked on a whole other journey into TV history, as it was the first TV show to be filmed with 35mm film in front of a live audience.

“I Love Lucy” reached proportional lengths, becoming one of the best-known and most-loved sitcoms that’s yet to exist. The two characters couldn’t seem more perfect for each other. This fact is backed up even more seeing as the two main stars of the show, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, were later married. The attraction is apparent in their onscreen relationship.

The show, which was filmed in front of 300 live audience members throughout its airing, was a hit and continues to be so. The best description of the actors’ portrayal of the characters is obvious through Desi’s description, saying he thinks Ball typically works better ‘if real people are watching her perform.”

Ball and Arnaz’s theme song also connects the two. Although the show only airs the lyrics once, the feeling of togetherness through the beginning of the show is one that is best-loved. If you’ve ever wanted to know the lyrics, here they are, seeing as they aired just once on “Lucy’s Last Birthday.” Do you know the lyrics?

“I love Lucy, and she loves me. We’re as happy as two can be. Sometimes we quarrel but then how we love making up again. Lucy kisses as no one can. She’s my missus, and I’m her man. And life is heaven, you see. ‘Cause I love Lucy, Yes, I love Lucy, and Lucy loves me.”

Would the show be the same as “Lucy and Larry” instead of “Lucy and Ricky”? I think not.
