‘I Love Lucy’: Why Lucille Ball’s Daughter Lucie Arnaz Didn’t Want to Be on ‘Here’s Lucy’

by Madison Miller

Certainly, being the daughter of one of the most influential and groundbreaking women in the entertainment world ever has some extreme positives, as well as drawbacks. Lucie Arnaz is the daughter of the iconic “I Love Lucy” couple, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

At a young age, Arnaz was introduced to the trials and tribulations of the entertainment world when her mother asked her to come on “Here’s Lucy.”

Lucie Arnaz on ‘I Love Lucy’ Follow-Up Series

“Here’s Lucy” was on from 1968 to 1974. It came after both “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show.” This program, however, was exceptionally close to Ball. It starred her alongside her long-time comedy partner, Gale Gordon. In addition to Gordon, Lucille Ball convinced her real-life children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., to come on the program.

Lucille Ball played Lucy Hinkley Carter in the new series with her kids, Kim and Craig. Lucille Ball had said that she did not want to continue starring in a series unless her two kids got to appear alongside her. This is how “Here’s Lucy” came to be.

Luckily, Ball was able to convince her two kids after all.

“I was 15 years old and I didn’t want to go on the show because I had a plan. I loved the theater and I wanted to study and get really good before I went out there as you know, Lucille Ball’s daughter trying to be a theater person … better be good if I’m going to come up against all of that criticism,” Lucie Arnaz said in a “KMC Chat: Coffee & Cocktails” interview from 2020.

Initially, her fear was that she didn’t want any of the “pressure” that would come from acting. Especially since she was the daughter of two iconic “I Love Lucy” actors and would appear alongside the icon herself.

Finally, she agreed to the program.

“She convinced us that if we would just trust her and go on the show that it would be a great learning experience and that she promised, I made her promise, that if the first few reviews or the first year, the word of mouth was those kids aren’t ready … if that’s true, mom, just find a way to write me out please I beg of you,” Arnaz also said.

Lucie Arnaz Gains Musical Experience

As it turned out, “Here’s Lucy” was Arnaz’s first real experience in the entertainment world and it ended up being quite positive. From there, she would gain a lot of knowledge and experience first-hand. Arnaz has become a performer herself, starring in a number of Broadway productions and other television shows over the years.

As it turns out, “Here’s Lucy” also introduced her to the joy of music. Her father, Desi Arnaz, had his own musical group, Desi Arnaz and His Orchestra. His beautiful Cuban music became a large influence on her career as well. She even performed in and directed “Babalu: A Celebration of the Music of Desi Arnaz and his Orchestra.”

“Here’s Lucy” had about six to eight musical episodes during its run. Lucie Arnaz shared that she was able to learn valuable skills like tap dance and traditional hula on the show. She even joked, “we were ‘Glee’ before there was ‘Glee.'”
