Addiction does not discriminate. You could be the biggest star in the world or living in a box and addiction can grab you and hold you down. It takes a strong will, hard work, and a strong support system to come out of it. Every day, people work through a number of different programs to find sobriety and serenity. On the other hand, some never get away from it. Without finding recovery, there are three options – jail, institutions, or death. So, it is always great to see someone who was once in the depths of addiction come out the other side alive and well. Jack Osbourne, son of metal icon Ozzy Osbourne, is celebrating doing just that.

Jack Osbourne has plenty to celebrate. He battled with addiction for quite some time. To make things worse, addiction runs in his family. Both his sister, Kelly, and his father have struggled with substance abuse and addiction over the years.

Yesterday, Jack Osbourne shared how long he has been clean and serene with his Instagram followers.

As of yesterday, Jack Osbourne has been sober for eighteen years. That is an impressive feat. In the caption of the post, Jack said a few words about having eighteen years between him, drugs, and drinking.

“It’s not that it gets easier or harder,” Osbourne wrote, “It’s just that it’s life on life’s terms. If anyone is trying to get sober, know that it [is] possible if you are willing to do the work.” He ended the post by sending “lots of love” to those who were with him on his road to recovery.

Jack Osbourne on Addiction and Recovery

Jack Osbourne’s downward spiral started early. He wasn’t even old enough to drive before he had his first drink. Before long, he escalated to smoking cannabis and was drinking more heavily. Then, he discovered OxyContin. By that time, he was locked into a cycle of addiction. He was still a kid when he went into treatment for the first time.

Back in February, Jack Osbourne and his parents sat down with Variety to talk about his and Ozzy’s battles with addiction and eventual sobriety. He said that getting sober is all about honesty, open-mindedness, and the willingness to do the work. He said that you just have to shut your mouth and be willing to take direction. If you want it bad enough, you can get it. Much like someone in active addiction can get high or drunk if they want to. It’s all about the direction of focus.
