Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Making Good on Promise, Coming Out With Covers Album ‘Georgia Blue’

If you’re a fan of Jason Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit, here is some news that is bound to make you happy. On Oct. 15, their newest album will be released. This album came about from a promise the 42-year-old made last year.

According to The Boot, this upcoming album will be available beginning on Oct. 15. It is titled “Georgia Blue” and is a covers album. It is being released by Southeastern Records. This is the label that was established by Jason Isbell.

Oct. 15 is the day when the “Georgia Blue” album will be released digitally. That date is also when Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will begin a run of shows at the famous Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Isbell and company will perform eight shows at the beloved venue.

Physical copies of “Georgia Blue” won’t be available to the public until Nov. 29.

The release of this cover – and of the upcoming album – came about thanks to a promise Jason Isbell made during the 2020 Presidential Election season. On Nov. 5, 2020, Isbell tweeted that he would make an album full of covers of “Georgia songs” if Joe Biden won the state. Biden, who is a Democrat, wasn’t guaranteed a victory in Georgia. The state had not gone to a member of his party since 1992 when President Bill Clinton took the state.

Well, Georgia went to Biden. So, Jason Isbell decided to keep his promise. From this promise came the “Georgia Blue” album.

Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile Joining Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit on Upcoming Covers Album

This upcoming covers album will feature a very solid selection of tracks performed with some very respected artists of the Americana genre.

Of course, Isbell’s wife, Amanda Shires, is involved. So is “The Highwomen” member and the “That Wasn’t Me” singer Brandi Carlile. Others joining Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit on the album include Julien Baker, Béla Fleck, Steve Gorman, Peter Levin, Brittney Spencer, Chris Thile, Sadler Vaden, and Adia Victoria.

If you’re curious about how the new album will sound, you can listen to one of the songs now. This available track is a cover of “Driver 8” by R.E.M. Also joining Isbell on this cover is John Paul White, who was once a member of the Civil Wars group.

Isbell also promised that proceeds from this album would go to charity. And, unsurprisingly, he is keeping this promise as well. The groups that will benefit from the upcoming album are Black Voters Matter, Fair Fight, and Georgia Stand-Up. These organizations work to protect voting rights.
