‘Jeopardy!’ 7-Day Champ Matt Amodio Addresses Critics of His Play Style: ‘Hope Nobody’s Offended By It’

by Megan Molseed

In just over a week “Jeopardy!” contestant, Matt Amodio has quickly become one of the popular game show’s most memorable players. Since his debut as a contestant on “Jeopardy!” earlier this month, Matt Amodio is ranked as one of the highest-scoring players in the long-running game show’s history.

And, he’s less than two weeks in.

However, some fans of the popular game show have noticed a habit the “Jeopardy!” champion seems to have. Some fans don’t seem to notice – or mind the unusual way Amodio has taken to answering the “Jeopardy!” questions. While others are very quick to point it out.

Phrasing The Answers Just Right

The long-running game show offers a question-and-answer quiz format. However, there is a twist to the game as the host gives the answers and it is up to the contestants to provide the question. Each and every response by the players must be phrased in the question format. Now, typically, during the show’s run, contestants use the therm “what is” for things, and the phrase “who is” when a topic is a person. However, Amodio has bucked that tradition a bit. During his run on the game show, Matt seems to stick with “what is” when answering. Even if the subject following the phrase is a person.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the “Jeopardy!” champion discussed this unique style.

“I don’t necessarily want to say too much about that,” Amodio said when asked if that may have been related to a strategy.

“I guess I just want to say that I hope nobody’s offended by it,” Amodio continued. “I do hear some people say that it’s disrespectful to the game, and I would counter that if there was a “Jeopardy!” fan club ranking, I think I would have a strong case to be number one “Jeopardy!fan.”

Amodio added that his unique answering style is in no way intended to undermine the rules of the game.

“I live and breathe the show,” he said. “I love every aspect of it, and so I’m definitely not doing it out of any disrespect.”

A New “Jeopardy!” Champion

Matt Amodio was first introduced to “Jeopardy!” fans when “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts was running the show during her recent stint as “Jeopardy!” guest-host. Amodio continued his winning streak as the newest guest host, LeVar Burton stepped in to fill the hosting duties.

The “Jeopardy!” champion is a computer science Ph.D. student. Amodio hails from New Haven Connecticut. So far, the “Jeopardy!” champion has won over $291,000 so far. Thursday brought the “Jeopardy!” champion a huge win of $74,000. Amodio entered the Final Jeopardy round with $44,000. He bet $30,000 in the round, and the winning answer brought the contestant up to $74,000.
