It would difficult to find someone who hasn’t heard of Jeopardy! Late host Alex Trebek once gave a very poignant reason for the show’s popularity all over the United States.
In a 1994 interview, Trebek said that “there are bright people in every part of the country.” And you know who loves Jeopardy! ? Bright people.
“Bright people love showing off their skills,” Trebek explained, “If you know something, you want other people to know that you know that.”
The touching message that every region of the country is full of curious and bright minds speaks exactly to the kind of environment Alex Trebek fostered on Jeopardy! for decades. It doesn’t matter if you’re from New York, Arkansas, Idaho, or California; Jeopardy! is about the fun that comes with knowledge.
Of course, Trebek knew there was probably a bit more to the show’s success. He also attributed it to the amount of money a contestant can win. That, he said, brings in more viewers as well as more contestants. The more money people can win, the more people will be interested in participating, making the competition tougher and more exciting to watch.
Currently, the show is rotating through various celebrity guest hosts following Alex Trebek’s passing. A new permanent host will be announced at some point soon. Some of the guest hosts include Anderson Cooper, Aaron Rodgers, and, controversially, Dr. Oz. Most viewers hope that hosts bring a similar optimistic attitude and respect for the truth that Alex Trebek had to the show.
‘Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek Tried to See the Best in People
Trebek often displayed an optimism about humankind that feels rare. His widow, Jean Trebek sat down with Today and talked about the late host’s legacy and his belief in fellow human beings.
“I think that is one of Alex’s gifts was that he could be very resolute and know that the truth will not hurt you,” Jean said, “and he wanted to empower people to move through whatever challenge they had in life with a sense of inner strength, inner dignity, and love.”
For Alex Trebek, his affection for his fellow people was based on the truths he saw. During his life, Trebek made generous contributions to charity to help out his fellow man. His charity work includes funding scholarships, public parks, fighting homelessness, and funding global projects.
For Trebek, bright people existed everywhere. He wanted to help how he could. He passed away from cancer last year. Now, Jean Trebek continues to uplift her husband’s legacy through philanthropic efforts.
